What is IRC?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and it is a method for chatting with others on the internet. IRC allows you to chat in rooms called IRC channels with multiple people at the same time. These rooms can be set public, to allow anyone to participate, or private, in case a Combine faction or smaller group prefers a room of their own to use for specific members only. IRC also allows you to chat privately with another person, like an instant messenger, so that nobody can listen in on your conversation.

Which program should I download?
There are many programs out there. For PCs the most popular is mIRC, which is available at http://www.mirc.com. The program is shareware, but can be used for free indefinitely. This guide will be explaining from the mIRC perspective, since it is, by far, the most commonly used IRC client available, and is the only program officially supported by the IRC help staff.

However, if you find mIRC too complicated, or if you simply do not intend to access IRC regularly enough to bother downloading a client, you can use the SWC-JavaChat. This is a program that will open directly in your browser and defaults to the Combine's technical support channel where you can talk with the Combine's help staff live. Please note that an answer will not always come immediately, so patience is needed. Helpers volunteer their time, and do not always respond within the first 2 minutes of you coming online asking "can I get some help?" so it is best to ask your question right away upon entering, or type people's names to get their attention as many helpers set their clients to alert them when their name is entered.

Please note that it is recommended that you change your name to something other than the default SWC_Member, especially if you are having difficulties connecting, because on any IRC server, multiple people cannot have the same name. This will also make it easier for others to identify and address you.

Another good alternative for those on Linux based Operating Systems is Xchat, with their Documentation found here.

mIRC Download and Installation
After following the download link on http://www.mirc.com, save the program to a location on your computer that you will remember (such as your desktop), and double-click the installation file to run it. Follow all of the on screen instructions, as it will walk you quickly through the process.

Logging In
After opening the program and passing the pop-up screen that has the Author on it (by clicking on it), the Options window will come up. On the left hand side there is a directory tree marked "Category". To the right of that are all the options for each category.

Go to Connect > Servers

There are several servers that the program comes with but the Combine's server is not one of the defaults.

Press [Add] and fill in the following information

Description: SWC:irc.swcombine.com
IRC Server: irc.swcombine.com
Port(s): 6667
Group SWC

No Password is needed

Press [OK]

(Description can be anything, but for simplicity sake, it is a good idea to add the "SWC" and the server address. Some networks include multiple servers that are linked together, so they should all have a similar name, but that does not apply for the Combine.)

Now that you have entered the information and saved it, under IRC Server it should read SWC:irc.swcombine.com . If it does not, press the expand down arrow and search for it, then select it.

Press [Connect to Server]

Entering a Channel
After you have logged in, a list of default IRC channels comes up in a popup screen. These are only general suggestions built into mIRC, and on the SWC server, none of them are actual channels (rooms). If you want you can delete them all.

In the box under Enter a channel name and click join: type in one of the following suggested channels to start off with:

#SWC-Members
#SWC-Traders

Then click Join. You are now in that channel. To join another channel type the following line:

/join #channelnamehere

Channel names cannot include spaces.

The List of Channels
To view the list of all of the channels on the server that are not hidden, type:

/list

The list will come up in a separate window and will show you the channel name and topic, as well as the number of members in the channel.

Registering your IRC nickname
You must register your nick with the server before anyone can give you special access (more on special access later) such as a voice, an op, or even access to a hidden channel. This will also ensure that others do not use your name, so registering your nick is highly recommended.

Type /msg nickserv REGISTER password email

where "password" is one that you choose and "email" is your email address. For another explanation of the command, you can type /msg nickserv help register

Identifying
Once your nick is registered, every time you connect to the server you must identify with nickserv, or nickserv will think you are stealing someone else's nick and will change your nick to an anonymous one with a string of numbers attached. IE: swcmember12345678

To identify, type /identify password

Note: All nicks trying to join #SWC-Members or #SWC-Traders with the name swcmember###### will automatically get kicked from that room.

Basic Commands
The following are some basic commands to get you started.

/me
Type this when you want to perform an action. For example, "/me goes to work" will show up as * SWC_Member goes to work

/join #channel
Replace #channel with the name of the channel to join that channel.

/msg nickserv group OriginalNick password
Change your nick to the new one that you want then type this command to link to your registered nick. You can only do this every 300 seconds.

/nick name
Where name is the new name you want as a nickname. Changes your nick.

/query username
Opens up a new window with another person

/part #channel descrip
Causes you to leave a channel and descrip is a parting message

/msg text here
Allows you to send text to another user without opening a query screen

Need to leave a message for someone who is offline? Here are the commands for Memoserv

/memoserv help
Gives a description for memoserv
/memoserv help commands
Gives a list of commands

Replace any command name in place of commands for more help on those.

To send a memo:
/memoserv send nickname|channel text-here-for-the-message
Example: /memoserv send SWC_Member Hi SWC_Member, how are you doing?

To read your memo(s)
/memoserv list
Lists the memo(s) waiting for you in your inbox.

IRC Services Shortcuts
/msg nickserv & /msg chanserv can be shortened on the irc.swcombine.com server by type /ns & /cs

NickServ Help: /ns help commands
ChanServ Help: /cs help commands

This will output their respective commands. For help on a specific command, type the same thing again, but replace the word "commands" with that command. For example, if you want help with ChanServ's "set" command, you would type: /cs help set

Be aware, however, that not all IRC clients support these shortcuts. If you receive an error message when using /ns or /cs, you may need to use the long format instead (/msg nickserv and /msg chanserv).

Auto Tasking
It is possible to set mIRC to automatically identify you or join specific channels or perform other such commands for you when you connect. This can save you the effort of needing to enter all of your commonly used commands manually every time you visit IRC.

Click Options [ icon 2nd to the left and has a hammer and a file]
Under Connect > Options > Perform
Checkmark "Enable perform on connect"
If the SWC is the only network you use follow Step 1 Those who use different networks follow Step 2:

Step 1: Leave Network: as "All Networks"
Under Perform commands:
Enter /identify password and your /join commands
Make sure you put each command on its own line

Step 2: Click Add Network
If you cannot see your network, you have to go to the Connect > Servers and edit your network with a Group name
Then go back to Options > Perform and Add the Network
In the drop down box, select that network
Add specific commands for that network

Setting up a New Channel
To setup a new channel, first type /join #newchannel, where #newchannel is the name of the channel you want to set up. Make sure it is not registered already. You can tell by the +r at the top of the screen next to the name

Once you are in the channel, to register it, it is best that no one else is in the channel.

You must have a registered nick to register a channel:

/cs register #channel password description
#channel = the channel name you want to register
password = the password you want to set up for changing settings
description = a brief description of what the channel is for

/cs help register gives a more in-depth description of registering

Now leave and re-enter your new channel. If you are using mIRC you can type /hop to leave and re-enter.

You now have a . in front of your name, which indicates that you are the founder of the channel.

Channel Privileges
Have you wondered what all the @ % and + symbols next to people's names mean?
They represent channel privileges and have the following significance:

. is Founder
@ is Op (Operator)
% is Half-Op
+ is Voiced (If the channel has +m on, anyone without at least a + cannot speak, but voice has no other function, whereas the other access levels do.)

The Channel Founder is the only one who can change the permanent settings for that channel.
If you want a cofounder, they need to type this line in once with their registered nickname. /cs identify #channelname password

OPs, depending if they are SOP or AOP can change the room topic, kick/ban people and give privs that are below their level.

HalfOPs(%) can kick people halfop and lower, and can give a halfop but cannot add an automatic halfop. HOPs(%) can give automatic voice (+) though.

Voice can speak if the room is moderated(+m), but is usually just granted to set a user apart from others.

The Access List
/cs access #channel list lists everyone who has a privilege on that channel.

Part A: Follow this if your channel has the access list enabled, if you get the following messages, " -ChanServ- You can't use this command." and "-ChanServ- Use the AOP, SOP and VOP commands instead." then follow Part B

/cs access #channel add nick +30,40,50,100 adds a person to the Access List.
+0 Default level, you don't need to add this level
+30 Voice (+)
+40 Halfop (%)
+50 AOP (Auto-OP) (@)
+100 SOP (Super-OP) (@)

/cs access #channel del nick removes a person from the Access List.
/cs access #channel add nick -100 chanserv automatically bans the person

Part B: Follow this if your status screen said to use the AOP, SOP and VOP commands instead.

/cs vop #channel add nick Adds a person to the VOP list (+)
/cs hop #channel add nick Adds a person to the HOP list (%)
/cs aop #channel add nick Adds a person to the AOP list (@)
/cs sop #channel add nick Adds a person to the SOP list (@)

If you prefer the Part A method then type /cs set #channel XOP off
This will remove the XOP feature and allow you to use /cs access #channel add nick +#

Permanent Channel Modes
Restricted Access: /cs set #channel restricted on/off
Restricted Access means that in order to enter the channel, you must be on the access list with any level greater than 0.

Modes: /cs set #channel mlock modes
+s Secret mode (cannot see it in /list unless you're in the channel)
+p Private mode (cannot see it in /list unless you're in the channel)
+i Invite Only
+m Moderated mode (users without a +, %, @, or . in the channel cannot speak.)

For more help type:
/cs help set
/cs help set restricted
/cs help set mlock

Colors, Bold, Underline, Etc.
Colors: Hold down Ctrl + K
Follow this with the following format #,#
Where the first # is the text and the 2nd after the comma is background

A window pops up with all the available colors.

Bold Text: Hold down Ctrl + B (the same again cancels it)
Underlined Text: Hold down Ctrl + U (the same again cancels it)

Other Stuff
Scripts, such as /away scripts, trivia scripts, !seen scripts, or any other public scripts are not allowed in #SWC- channels, so make sure that they are disabled.

Bot scripts are not allowed on this server without advance permission. To obtain permission for your bot, mail the code and the name of the bot to chat@swcombine.com and one of the IRC staff members will respond to approve it.

If you have any questions regarding this server, ask one of the staff in the #Help channel (you may need to say their names to draw their attention, since most have highlights set up to alert them if they are at their computers). The list of who they are is listed in the Message of the Day (MOTD) in the status screen when you first connect to the server, and can be pulled up at anytime by typing /motd into your IRC client. For your convenience, they are listed here as well.

Current Staff Listing: Accessible from /motd in the status screen.

In the Combine, if you have several ships of the same type, you can set them to follow you.

What can I Squad?
There are a few types of ships that you can squad together. These include all the Fighter class ships as well as several freighters (Lambda Shuttle, DX-9 Dropship, Delta-Class JV-7 Escort Shuttle, Sentinel-class Landing Craft).

You can also squad any vehicles of the same type, this is particularly important for prospecting as using a squad of FK-7 Airspeeders or SX-65 Groundhogs will increase your chances.

How-To
In order to create a squadron, you MUST have "Pilot" privileges for the ships you wish to use.

* Click [Ships], under the [Inventory] tab on the sidebar.
* Click on the [Manage Piloted Ships] tab.
* To the left of all of the pictures of the ships, there is a checkbox. Check the box next to the ships you wish to create a squadron with.
* There is a drop-down box below the ships. It is titled [Select Action]. Click on it to drop it down and bring up more options.
* Select [Set Controller] and click [Process].

The process is similar for vehicles, however you use the vehicle inventory rather than the ships inventory.

Examples of Use
* Your Commanding Officer has asked you to transport a large group of fighters. There are three types of fighters: 7 Y-Wings, 4 X-Wings, and 6 A-Wings. However, you cannot make all of these fighters become a squadron. So, you must group and transport the fighters by type

2) Next to the picture of the item, check the boxes of the items you wish to send.

3) Then, under the [Select Action] drop-down menu, select [Makeover].

4) Once selected, a form will appear. Under [Name], put in the name of the person you wish to send these items to.

4a) There is an option to [Makeover Contents]. Only check this if you're transferring assets with items inside.

4b) If you wish, put in a reason to why you're making it over. This can be a short message like: Here's your items!

5) Click [Process], and the items will be sent.

General Definitions
* Thread/Topic: A number of individual posts related to the same topic and listed chronologically
* Forum: a page containing all threads in its category
* Message Board: a message board contains several forums

Message Boards
SWC contains a total of four different message boards, each with its own use:
* Message Centre: this is a completely Out-Of-Character board for everything from suggestions over administrative discussions to general chit-chat.
* RPG Centre: Mostly In-Character board with forums related to light role playing and trading
* Question Centre: This is where all your questions go!
* White Scenarios: Role playing board hosted off site. Scenarios here don't affect the database. However, you can earn XP.

You can reach the message boards from the "Forum" link at the top of every page. Please also make sure that whatever you post is in the proper forum. Each forum has a little description below the title that tells you what it is about.

Sticky Threads
Sticky threads are the most important topics of each forum. Often they contain the forum rules or FAQ, so please read those first (especially if the topic relates to anything you want to post) as not following the rules can get you banned from that forum rather quickly.

Restricted Forums
Many forums on the Message Centre are restricted to the general players. Those usually have the word "private" in their name, indicating that the game staff discusses upcoming changes or features that aren't supposed to be released to the public yet.

Using the Forums
Replying to a Thread
You can reply to any thread that is not locked and that isn't in a read-only forum. To reply to the thread you're currently reading, simply press the "Add Reply" button on the top-right or bottom right of the thread view.

You will then be able to enter your message in the text box that appears. Note that SWC's forums do not support most BBCode (i.e. all your formatting and images/links will have to be written in HTML. A guide to what codes are usable is available on the right-hand side of the text box. You can also change the topic of your own post (however this won't affect the general topic of the thread).

Before posting, select whether you want your signature appended to your post or not and press the "preview" or "post" buttons below (the "preview" button allows you to preview your message before posting, e.g. to make sure you properly formatted it).

Posting a New Thread
You can post a new thread in any forum that isn't a read-only forum and that you have access to. To create a new thread, simply click the "New Topic" button at the top-right of the forum view.

You will receive a page very similar to the Reply page that allows you to write the first post of your new topic. Don't forget to enter a proper title!

Marking Threads as Read
SWC's forum doesn't automatically mark threads as read once you have clicked on them. You can only mark all threads in a forum at once by clicking the "Mark Read" button on the top of the forum view.

Moderator Options
Forum moderators and forum administrators have more options available to them. This includes banning specific users from the forum as well as moving, closing and deleting individual threads and posts.

Faction Forums
Many Factions also operate their own forums for their internal discussion and communication with customers. SWC doesn't have any power over those, so any problems you have with those forums will have to be discussed with their respective operators.

Messages within SWC are referred to as DMs (Darkness Messages). These are the internal messaging system used, and allows players to communicate with each other within the game interface.

Sending Messages
To send a message is simple. At the top of the screen, just under the advertisement banner, there is a row of icons. These are explained in more detail elsewhere, but the one we are interested in is the 3rd from the right - it looks like an envelope. It will have 2 different looks depending on whether you have unread messages or not. These are explained later. Clicking this link will open your Message Inbox.

On the left of this page are three links. [Read Messages], [Send Message] and [Sent Messages]. Simple click the word Send Message and you will open up the compose message part of the page. Alternatively, on the sidebar to the right, near the very bottom, there is a [Send Message] link that will also take you to this page.

You will have 2 text boxes to write in. The first text box is where you input the name of the player you wish to send a message to. The system has an autofill option so if you type the first few letters, it will give you a list of players names that match those letters anywhere in their name. Be aware though that it has a limit to how many names it shows, and it always shows them in alphabetical order. To narrow down the options, simply input more of the name and it will updated as needed. You can also send the same message to more than one person by putting a comma (,) between each name. Be aware though that the autofill only works for the first name.

The second text box is where you input your message. Simple HTML codes will work, allowing you to embed pictures, or add bold text etc.

Click the [Send] button and the message will be sent.

Other Options
In addition there are several ways to bypass a lot of these steps. If you are browsing through the forum, each player will have a [Send Message] under the avatar. Clicking this will open the [Send Message] page, with their name already autofilled into the recipient field.

When browsing Profiles, there will be a [Send Message] option there as well, if that players profile is set to visible.

When looking at factions, clicking on a faction leaders name will open a new window with the [Send Message] page open and the leaders name filled in for you.

Receiving Messages
When you have received a message, the Message icon at the top will change. Usually its a faded image, but when you receive a new message it will either blink yellow (default setting) or be highlighted with white lines (if non-flashing icons is chosen in the Account Settings pages). Clicking this icon will open your inbox with just the new messages present, and hiding older messages.

Checking Old Messages
At any time you can check any message you have received in the last 30 days (messages older than this will be removed from your inbox to save server queries - they are archived, and you can contact any ASim to recover these old DMs). Clicking the [Read Messages] link in the inbox will open you entire DM inbox - you can scroll through them in the center of the page - there are no separate pages, so if you have a lot of DMs you may have to scroll through a lot of them. If you do not have a new message, this page will be whats opened automatically.

Checking Messages You Sent
This option will allow you to view all messages you have sent to other players over the last 30 days (for the same reason as above). You will have an option to send another DM to that player rather than having to copy/paste their name into a new [Send Message] page.
Creating your Character

Alya Tarrenis: rvv

This will be one of the most important steps you do while playing SWC. What you choose here will likely stick with you until your character dies, so have a clear image in your mind as to what sort of character you wish to play.

Step 1
Here you can choose to either base your character on a pre-made template, or perform everything manually. For your first time it is suggested that you look through the pre-made template options first to get an idea of what you may need. However, it is best to then go back and run through the whole process manually so you can choose what you want exactly.

Step 2
Here there are several options available to you:

Gender
Male or Female, pretty easy. This will have no effect on the mechanics of the game (there is no discrepancy between genders like in some other games), other than the server-based images that are available to you. Since you can change this image later at any time, this is an insigificant difference.

Skill Priorities
There are five different skill categories that you can set a priority for. This will determine that number of skill points you will have available to you to use in those skill areas. These are as follows:

Priority | Skill Points
1 || 14
2 || 10
3 || 8
4 || 6
5 || 4

Race
This is where you choose which race of creatures you would like to play as. A drop down box gives a list of all the playable races. Selecting one will give you some relevant details about that race, as well as an image of what a member of that race would look like.

Force Probability
This is the chance that you will be sensitive to the Force. The highest value obtained by a starting character is 6%. As you can see, planning on being able to use the Force is not a good strategy - many players spend years playing and still are not sensitive to the Force.

HP Bonus, Race Multiplier
These 2 values are used in the HP equations to determine how much health you start off with. Larger numbers mean more health.

Skill Bonuses
These are extra points that will be put into the skills listed. Because of the way skills work, if you want to max out a skill at character creation, you will need to find a race that has at least one skill bonus point in that skill.

Race Restrictions
Several races are limited in what vehicles and ships they can actually use. Though they cannot stop you playing, they do provide a larger challange to play than races without such restrictions. However, they generally have better stats elsewhere to make up for this shortfall.

Terrain Restrictions
This lists which terrain types that that race cannot move on without assistance. In general, all races cannot move on Gas Terrain and Volcanic Terrain. Most cannot move on Oceanic Terrain, but there are a few aquatic races that can.

Step 3
Assigning Skillpoints
Skills are arranged into 5 different catagories. General, Science, Social, Space and Ground. In this section, you are assigned a number of skillpoints based off how you prioritised your skills in the previous step. These skill points must be spent before you can continue with creating your character.

Skill points can be assigned using the combo box at the end of each skill. In that box, you can select which level you would like your character to be, with the skill points that level will cost.

Some races have bonuses in different skills. In the event that you are upgrading a skill which your race has a bonus, your character will start with those skills and will receive a discount for any future skill purchases. If your character has a level 2 race bonus in a certain skill, and you upgrade that skill, you will receive a discount of 2 skill points to offset the cost of skills received through the race bonus.

Contacting the leader of a faction you wish to join before attempting this step will help you focus your skill points on skills which will benefit you in the path you wish to take.

Step 4
Description and Biography
All information entered on this page can be edited through the Character pages, however, before you start you must provide a description and biography for your character.

This can be as brief or complex as you like, but must follow the guidelines shown on the page to prevent conflicting information.

You will then be given an option of generic images to use for your character avatar based off your race selection. You may upload your own image after you have completed creating your character if you wish.

Step 5
Confirmation
This is the final point in which you will be able to edit your skills, race and gender. If any of these are not how you would like your character to be, then this is your chance to go back and change it.

If you change your mind after you continue from this point, the only way you can change these is by killing off your character. This brings a 3 week 'death wait' before you can respawn.

Step 6
Starting Locations
It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join a faction before taking this step

Once your character has been created, you will see the standard Members page. You should be able to place your character at a variety of starting locations.

If you have not joined a faction before this point, you will be given the option to spawn in a starport on your character's race homeworld. If you have decided to join a faction before spawning, you will also have the option to spawn at one of their headquarters. Once you have spawned, your character is active and you can explore the galaxy.

Star Wars Combine (SWC) is a browser-based MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe. With many complex rules and interactions between players, factions and the game itself, this Guide is here to help you navigate the interface, understand various aspects of the game, and understand the mechanics behind the various activities you can perform.

If this is your first time playing SWC, it will be beneficial to look through the Getting Started and Basic Activities sections to get a broad understanding of some of the basic principles of the game. Once you have understood these, you will then better understand the more complex areas linked below these.

1 || 14
2 || 10
3 || 8
4 || 6
5 || 4
